Spanish Society for Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (SEHOP), Spain

Project Overview: This initiative is helping to further develop a personalized medicine program launched by SEHOP for children with cancer in Spain, called PENCIL. The goal of this program is to ensure that all pediatric cancer patients in Spain have access to precision oncology, while also building a national database to capture critical genetic and genomic profiles of pediatric cancers that can be used to inform and direct effective treatment. The program includes creation of an online portal, network and genomic hub for 50 pediatric oncology treatment centers in Spain. The network of treatment centers and physicians will develop standards in genomic testing across the country and create patient-friendly educational materials to inform parents of children with cancer about importance of personalized medicine approaches in pediatric oncology.

“The funding from the POPIA awards will support a network of clinicians in facilitating communication, accelerating the delivery of test results and maximizing access to precision oncology treatments to improve treatment outcomes for pediatric patients in Spain”

Fundación Natali Dafne Flexer (FNDF) COPPA Initiative, Argentina

Project Overview: The goal of this program is to enable the COPPA initiative, which is focused on increasing access to precision medicine to children with cancer, to analyze specimens from pediatric and adolescent cancers across Argentina and lead to better informed treatment plans and to assemble a significant database of bioinformatics to help direct future progress in pediatric cancer. The ability to analyze specimens and resulting analysis will provide vital information to direct treatment and to understand trends of cancer diagnosis and outcomes in various regions of the country. Local pediatric oncologists will provide samples to the COPPA initiative, which will analyze the samples and identify appropriate treatment plans.

"The grant will help to fund COPPA, our national collaborative program, which will improve treatment outcomes for children and adolescents with cancer by providing them with access to advanced precision oncology diagnostics to help guide their treatment and care"

2021 Winners

HOPE Foundation of Cancer Care, Taiwan

Project Overview: This patient-centric initiative is comprised of two parts, education and advocacy. Both parts led to increased awareness of personalized treatment and precision medicine, where the newest medical technologies prolong and improve lives. Through educational videos, printed handbooks, AI chatbots, a mobile APP, webpage, frontline services, and the release of a policy-based positioning paper, the HOPE foundation aims to target patients, patients’ families, policy makers, and insurance leaders to improve the many shortcomings that stand in the way of patients receiving personalized care in Taiwan.

“We are honored to receive this award, which enables us to better serve the cancer community in Taiwan. Thank you, Bayer, for your dedication to precision oncology care.”

Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Network (3CTN), hosted by the Ontario Institute Cancer Research

Project Overview: 3CTN will create the Precision Oncology Map, a uniquely comprehensive, visual representation of all cancer clinical trials active in Canada that have a focus on precision medicine. The goal is to go beyond existing trial registry data to make it easier for cancer patients, their caregivers, and the research community to locate suitable clinical trials. There is a particular focus on precision medicine trials involving specific biomarkers and targeted therapies.

“Our POPIA experience has been very positive; we would encourage others to consider it as an opportunity to incorporate the patient voice in precision oncology research initiatives.”
